Fishing in Key West is the biggest and broadest fleet in the chain. We read the websites of the 204 charter boats working out of here and verified 52 of them in detail. Every number below comes from a sentence a captain published themselves.
What Key West Fishing Costs
Published rate cards from the charters’ own websites, tenth to ninetieth percentile. These are whole-boat prices — you charter the vessel, not a seat.
| Trip | Range | Median | Rate cards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Half day (3-5 hours) | $500–$1,000 | $750 | 51 |
| Three-quarter day (6-7 hours) | $700–$1,400 | $900 | 31 |
| Full day (8+ hours) | $900–$1,800 | $1,250 | 32 |
A typical Key West card reads: “4 Hours — Half Day: $850, 6 Hours — 3/4 Day: $1,150, 8 Hours — Full Day: $1,350, 10 Hours: $1,550, 12 Hours: $1,750” — Cowboy Cowgirl SportFishing Charters. Compare across the chain on the Florida Keys guide.
What the Boats Here Target
Counted from the 63 Key West boats with a verified species list. The multiple is how much more often a fish is named here than across the Keys as a whole.
| Fish | Boats naming it | vs all Keys boats |
|---|---|---|
| Grouper | 39 of 63 | 1.0× |
| Tarpon | 34 of 63 | 1.0× |
| Barracuda | 30 of 63 | 1.4× |
| Tuna | 30 of 63 | 0.9× |
| Permit | 29 of 63 | 1.1× |
| Mahi | 26 of 63 | 0.9× |
| Shark | 24 of 63 | 1.2× |
| Sailfish | 24 of 63 | 0.8× |
| Wahoo | 21 of 63 | 0.9× |
| Bonefish | 18 of 63 | 0.9× |
Barracuda is what sets Key West apart. 30 of its 63 boats name it — 1.4 times the rate across all verified Keys boats. That is a tilt in what captains advertise, not a billing: plenty of other fish are caught here, they are just advertised everywhere else too.
When to Fish Key West
Months where three or more Key West charters agree, counted on their own sites. Only 12 species clear that bar here, so this is a narrower picture than the chain-wide calendar.

| Mahi | Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Oct, Dec | June (13 charters) |
| Sailfish | Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Oct, Nov, Dec | December (11 charters) |

| Snapper | Oct | October (3 charters) |
| Bonefish | Aug | August (3 charters) |
Where Key West Charters Depart
Marinas and launch points named by the captains themselves, counted where three or more agree. These are departure points, not fishing grounds — the sentences behind them say where a boat leaves from, which is not the same as where it fishes.
- Hurricane Hole MarinaNamed by 5 Key West captains. “Captain Rio runs private fishing, spearfishing, snorkelling and sunset charters out of Hurricane Hole Marina in Key West, for up to six guests at a flat rate.”
Fishing Key West From Shore
Every number above this line comes from a charter’s own website, and charters are no use to you if you are not getting on a boat. This section is different: it is drawn from Florida Keys public discussion among anglers, counted rather than quoted. These are the Key West shore spots they raise most often.
| Spot | Times raised | Separate conversations |
|---|---|---|
| Fort Zachary | 6 | 4 |
| Boca Chica | 4 | 4 |
| White Street Pier | 3 | 3 |
| Higgs Beach | 3 | 3 |
| Smathers | 2 | 2 |
| Geiger Key | 2 | 2 |
Fort Zachary comes up most — raised 6 times across 4 separate conversations. We have not verified any of it against an official source, and a popular spot is not a permitted one: bridges, state parks and the sanctuary each have their own rules. Check before you fish.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a fishing charter in Key West?
A half day runs $500 to $1,000 for the whole boat, from 51 published rate cards, and a full day $900 to $1,800 from 32. You are chartering the vessel, not buying a seat.
What fish can you catch in Key West?
The 63 verified boats here name 38 species between them. The most common are grouper, tarpon, barracuda, tuna, permit. Barracuda stands out: it is named 1.4 times as often here as across the Keys.
Do you need a fishing license in Key West?
Not on a charter. FWC exempts anyone fishing from a for-hire vessel with a valid charter licence, so the boat covers you. Permits are separate though — the snook permit, spiny lobster permit and tarpon tag are each required in addition to a licence, and on the tarpon tag FWC says plainly there are no exemptions.
How many people fit on a Key West charter?
Of the 34 boats here publishing a capacity, 24 cap at six — the US Coast Guard limit for an uninspected charter vessel, and the usual private-charter answer. But 10 of them carry more, up to 49: inspected vessels and party boats sell larger trips, so a big group here is one boat or two depending on which you book.
